Hi guys, I am now the proud owner of the new Absolute Crisis. Cheers for the review Paul as it was what triggered me to make the purchase.
You see I’m also a proud owner of the 2005 Absolute edition and was not sure I’d want to buy what might have been just a minor upgrade.
Well it’s really not minor! The restoration is amazing and the colours are truly popping.
The original comic was, I think, an unfortunate victim of that new flexographic process which made the colours brighter and more vivid (or was it a new paper? Can’t remember rightly) Either way, colourists were used to over-compensating for the toilet paper comics were normally printed on and suddenly we saw it.
The 2005 colouring was muted down in comparison to the saturated original. But now I can see the vivid original, but done in a way properly sympathetic to the paper. It looks beautiful.
What I was suspecting from your review has turned out to be true… The companion book is completely different to the one from the 2005 edition. I’m sure a lot of the background information is similar, just presented in a different format.
But it means I have something new, not merely something updated. My old edition contains a lot that the new one doesn’t, including all the material from the old Murray Ward/Mark Waid Index issues.
So I’m doubly proud to have both versions on my shelf.
And one other thing – It has come at the perfect time. I’ve been doing a marathon readthrough of every Superman story from 1938 up to 1986. And I’m currently at mid-1985 just before the first Crisis Crossover issues.
