L.E.G.I.O.N.P.O.D.Cast Episode 22: Planetary Champ Level Slam Poetry

Murray, Paul and Al take a look at beatnik poetry and jam a little about the events of L.E.G.I.O.N. ’90 #19. Say what, daddio? Beatniks? Slam poetry? It’s all groovy, baby. Grab a hot java and take a listen.

  1. Marij’n’s transformation, which has been going on for a few issues now but is directly referenced here, really kinda throws me. At first she was kind of a throwaway gag character – poor Garryn has a fat wife, lol, which is definitely a joke that’s of its time. But as she continued in the book and became an important part of the support structure of L.E.G.I.O.N., it was kind of interesting to have a female character who didn’t look like every other female in comic books (besides Strata, obviously). It made the book feel unique. Then along comes the eye and basically gives Marij’n an ultimate makeover until she’s able to swap catsuits with Lady Quark or Phase. It just seems like a weird decision and made the book less unique. Do you think it was editorially mandated? Or as the creative teams gradually shifted, did the new guys just not feel like writing/drawing Marij’n as originally envisioned?

  2. Oh, and Paul – (keeping the R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. conversation going): I definitely see your point about them being more Academy than Subs. My only counter would be tonally: the R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. are much morel lighthearted and even goofy compared to the main roster of L.E.G.I.O.N., and while Academy had a younger, more fun cant than mainstream Legion, I never really saw them as funny in the same way as I did the R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S.
